Scope and Content Detail of mask stop on south-east window in court of offices at Castle Toward, Argyll and Bute The original Castle Toward was erected in 1820 for Kirkman Finlay. The architect was David Hamilton (1768-1843) who designed it in a Gothic castellated style. In 1920-4 the house was altered and extended in the same style by Francis Deas (1862-1951). Hamilton designed the court of offices in the same Gothic castellated style as the house. This projecting stone is at the end of a hood-mould, which is above a large arched window. Carved in the style of a grotesque face, it is known as a mask stop. Castle Toward was one of Hamilton's more conventional Gothic designs, but according to the New Statistical Account for Scotland (1845), 'there was none of that talented architect's plans which he himself considered more satisfactory'.
