Scope and Content View of entrance staircase in Castle Toward from the south, Argyll and Bute Castle Toward was built in two stages. The original house was erected in 1820 for Kirkman Finlay, a wealthy Glasgow merchant. In 1920-4 the west section of the house was added for Andrew Coats, a member of the Paisley thread-making family. David Hamilton (1768-1843) designed the original house, including its interior, in a Gothic style. The staircase hall retains its original plaster ceiling which is decorated with rib vaulting and circular ornaments at the intersections, known as bosses. The wooden door at the top of the stairs is decorated with Perpendicular-style tracery. However, much of the house was redecorated in the 1920s when the second half of the castle was designed by the architect, Francis Deas (1862-1951). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
