Scope and Content View of east entrance front to Poltalloch House, Argyll and Bute This Jacobean-style mansion, now a roofless shell, was built for Neill Malcolm between 1849 and 1853 to designs produced in the London office of William Burn (1789-1870). Burn himself staked out the proposed outline of the building in 1845. The main house was designed on a U-plan around three sides of a courtyard. The east entrance front was flanked to the right by an additional stable court. It is built of white sandstone ashlar and had slated roofs which were dismantled in 1957. The landscape architect William Nesfield (1793-1881) gave advice on the setting of the house and he designed the lozenge-pierced parapet around the south and east sides of the entrance forecourt. It continued south of the house to enclose the lawn. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
