Scope and Content Slipway, Balloch, Dunbartonshire This 'patent slip' was built by the Dumbarton and Balloch Joint Line Committee to allow its steamships on Loch Lomond to be drawn out of the water for inspection, repair and repainting. The vessel was drawn up on a wooden cradle. This view shows the slip looking towards the engine-house, which housed a large steam winch. In the foreground are the double rails on which the centre of the wooden cradle ran, with a ratchet rail in the centre to prevent the cradle slipping back. This slipway was used for its original purpose until c199o. The last vessel to use it was the 'Countess Fiona', formerly the 'Countess of Breadalbane', which sat on it for several years before being scrapped in 2000. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
