Scope and Content PS 'Maid of the Loch, Balloch Pier, Dunbartonshire This small paddle steamer was constructed by A and J inglis of Glasgow for the British Transport Commission to replace two elderly paddle steamers which provided excursion services on Loch Lomond. She was the last paddle steamer built in Britain. This view shows the steamer berthed at Balloch Pier, the rail-served departure point for excursion services on the loch. The vessel was withdrawn from service in the early 1970s, but was not scrapped. She is seen here as laid up. This steamer was built for levels of ttraffic which were not sustained, as people travelled further afield for holidays. After passing through various hands she was being refurbished in the late 1990s, initially for static use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
