Description Haddington, Bridge Street, Nungate Bridge General View

Date 1979

Collection John R Hume

Catalogue Number SC 556570

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Nungate Bridge, Haddington, East Lothian This bridge was built in the 16th century with three pointed arches, over the river Tyne. It is close to the large parish church of St Mary, and may have been built partly to facilitate access to it. It was altered at the east end in the 18th century. This view shows the three 16th century arches, seen from the south west. The pointing of the arches, unusual outside in Scotland outside East Lothian, is evident, as are the massive triangular cutwaters, typical of the period. This bridge was retained as a footbridge after it was supplanted for main-road traffic in the early 19th century. It remains a picturesque feature of the river-front of the town which has been spared over-development. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
