Scope and Content Sluice House, Loch Vennachar, Perthshire This remarkable structure was built as part of the scheme to bring Loch Katrine water to Glasgow. The loch had previously flowed into the river Teith, and to maintain an agreed flow of water in that river Loch Vennachar was impounded. This sluice house is at the south end of the dam which impounds the loch, and contains a series of sluices which regulate the flow of 'compensation water' from the loch into the Teith. The engineer for the scheme was JF Bateman. Bateman recognised the value of monumentality in public works, an approach the Glasgow magistrates endorsed. This was a pioneering long-distance gravitation water-supply scheme. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
