Scope and Content Clock Mill (woollen), Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire The woollen industry of the Hillfoots of Clackmannanshire was second only in scale, in Scotland, to that of the Borders. This was one of a number of water-powered wool spinning mills supplying yarn to handloom weavers. This view shows the mill from the north west, with the owner's house on the north end. The waterwheel was about halfway along the side of the building, below the hoist seen here. The mill was still weaving textiles in 1979. The towns of Alva, Alloa and Tillicoultry and the village of Menstrie were at the core of the woollen industry of the area, with outposts in Stirling, Cambusbarron and Clackmannan. The wool originally came from sheep reared on the nearby Ochil Hills. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
