Gairlochy, Caledonian Canal, Keeper's House General View

SC 556404

Description Gairlochy, Caledonian Canal, Keeper's House General View

Date 8/8/1979

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 556404

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Gairlochy Locks, Caledonian Canal, Inverness-shire These locks are at the south-west end of Loch Lochy, and take the level of the canal down to a pound which runs through to the top lock at Banavie (Neptune's Staircase). The upper lock was added as a regulating and flood-control lock. This view shows the former lock-keepers' houses at Gairlochy, built to a Telford design, also found at Banavie, very like his standard tollhouse design, with low-pitched roof, overhanging eaves and bowed front, but with two storeys. By 1979, with improved road transport it was no longer necessary to have the lock-keepers living on site, and this building was being used as a guesthouse. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
