Scope and Content Red Goth public house, Kelty, Fife The village of Kelty was developed from the 1880s to serve neighbouring coal pits in the west Fife coalfield. These pits were deeper than their predecessors, and employed larger numbers of people, with a need for community facilities. This view shows the Red Goth public house, built of red terra-cotta brick, with red sandstone dressings, in a style typical of the turn of the century. The building was one of the larger structures in Kelty, and was still in use in 1979. This was one of a number of public houses built in Fife and Lothian, during the development of deep mining, to be managed on the 'Gothenburg' principle, devised in Sweden, where the customers shared in the profits from the sale of drink.
