Scope and Content Former flax-spinning mill, Milton of Balgonie, Fife This works was established in 1807, and extended c 1840. It closed in 1886. It was powered by water drawn from a weir on the river Leven, a short distance upstream. The mill buildings were ruinous by 1979. This view shows the mill lade in the foreground, with the former wheelhouse at the end, and the ruin of the mill building to its right. The lade was retained to power a small hydro-electric station, installed in the early 20th century. The river Leven was one of the most densely utilised rivers in the east of Scotland. This mill was situated just below the point where a long lade from Loch Leven rejoined the river. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
