Scope and Content Harbour and kilns, Charlestown, Fife The lime works at Charlestown was established by the fifth Earl of Elgin to supply lime by sea to markets all over the east coast of Scotland. There were thick seams of limestone in the vicinity, and coal a short distance inland. This view shows the kilns in the background, and the head of the original pier on the right. To the left is the head of the west pier added c1840 for the shipment of coal. The long arched block of kilns were the originals, with others to the left. The kilns operated until c1939, though the crushing of limestone continued into the 1950s. The harbour was used for shipbreaking from the 1920s to the 1950s, and it is now a yacht haven.
