Scope and Content Former slate quarries, Belnahua Island, off Luing, Argyll This island was worked for its slate in the 19th and early 20th century, to the extent that the island itself was almost completely removed by the quarries, the surviving island being composed mainly of slate waste. This view shows the remains of a steam derrick crane, probably used to handle slate slabs. The mechanism, which rotated with its double post, is in the centre, with the remains of the wooden jib in front. The base of a back leg is to the left. The quarries were worked out before the First World War, and the island abandoned. Much of the metalwork was removed for scrap, but in 1978 enough remained to show how the quarries had been worked.
