Belnahua Slate Quarries, Jetty General View

SC 555578

Description Belnahua Slate Quarries, Jetty General View

Date 1978

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 555578

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Former slate quarries, Belnahua Island, off Luing, Argyll This island was worked for its slate in the 19th and early 20th century, to the extent that the island itself was almost completely removed by the quarries, the surviving island being composed mainly of slate waste. This view shows the pier which served the island, with the rail track along which a trolley ran carrying the slates from the dressing floors. The quarries were worked out before the First World War, and the island abandoned. Much of the metalwork was removed for scrap, but in 1978 enough remained to show how the quarries had been worked.
