Scope and Content St Magdalene Distillery, Linlithgow, West Lothian This distillery was founded c1798, and developed over the next century by A and J Dawson. It was bought in 1912 by The Distillers' Co Ltd, who added a drum maltings at the east end of the site. It was closed in 1983, and sold for housing. This view shows the street frontage of the old maltings and warehouse block, at the west end of the site, as seen from the railway. The lower two floors were used for warehousing, and the rest of the building for malting, an unusual arrangement. This block proved more difficult to adapt to housing than the other range, and lay empty and decaying until 2000, when work started on its conversion. It probably dated from the mid 19th century, and was one of the finest distillery buildings of its time. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
