Scope and Content Part of the George IV Bridge, Edinburgh The George IV Bridge is a major urban viaduct built to link the Old Town of Edinburgh with the flat land to the south, from which it is separated by a deep valley. Like the South Bridge to the east the sides are lined with buildings. This view shows the arch over the Cowgate, seen here from the west, with its distinctive and notably elegant cast iron railings. The viaduct was designed by Thomas Hamilton, and built under the city's 1827 Improvement Act. It was named after George IV because of the enthusiasm he had generated by visiting the city in 1822, the first Hanoverian monarch so to do. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
