Date 1978

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 555291

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Model housing, Tron Square, off Cowgate, Edinburgh Tron Square is the name given to a group of L-plan five-storey tenements with projecting stair towers and open gallery access to individual flats, an arrangement favoured at the time to minimise the risk of transmission of disease, notably tuberculosis. This view shows one of the tenements, seen from the Cowgate looking north east. The octagonal corner bays minimise the impact of the adjacent stair towers. The crowstepped stair towers are a gesture to the historic location south of the Royal Mile. These houses were designed by the City Engineer's Department to house families displaced by slum clearance, and by the gentrification of part of the Royal Mile. Unlike many such schemes this one has been refurbished and still survives. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
