Scope and Content Ice-house, Crinan Ferry, Argyll This is a large commercial ice-house, comparable in scale and construction with contemporary east-coast examples, and built to store ice for shipping salmon caught by boats operating from the nearby pier. This view shows the rear of the building, which has been built into a rocky outcrop. The vaulted roof is covered with earth as a layer of insulation. The opening in the rear wall was use for loading ice into the chamber. The ice stored in this chamber would have been cut from local lochs in winter, and stored for packing the salmon in spring and summer for shipment, probably to Glasgow.
