Scope and Content Minor light, Dunollie, Oban, Argyll This small unmanned lighthouse was provided by the Northern Lighthouse Board for the guidance of vessels using Oban harbour at a time when it was intensively used both by commercial craft and visiting yachtsmen. This view shows the lighthouse from the south. The rustic masonry, clearly seen here, is unique in a Scottish lighthouse. In the background is Dunollie Castle, ancient stronghold of the MacDougall family. The ornamental treatment of this light is probably due to its position in front of some high-class hotels. Since 1979 this light has been fitted with 'collimating screens' which make its two-coloured beams more clearly distinguishable to mariners. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
