Scope and Content Bascule bridge, Forth and Clyde Canal, Bowling, Dunbartonshire This bridge spans the Forth and Clyde Canal between the upper and lower basins at Bowling, on a section of canal completely remodelled when the Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire Railway was built. This view shows the bridge from the east, with the Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire's hydraulically-operated swing bridge in the background. The bascule bridge is of the Forth and Clyde standard type, and was the only one operable by the 1970s. The modifications made for the construction of the railway included the construction of a new upper basin, and the link between the two basins. These works were executed in concrete, channelled and coloured to resemble masonry. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
