Scope and Content Aray Bridge, Inveraray, Argyll This splendid two-span masonry arch bridge was designed by Robert Mylne to replace an bridge built in 1758-60 by John Adam, which had been destroyed by floods in 1772. The great size of the arches was probably due to that experience. This view shows the bridge from the north, with Inveraray Pier in the background. The ornamental appearance is due to its proximity to the Duke of Argyll's residence, Inveraray Castle. Note the open oculus between the arches. Open oculi were fairly common in bridge designs of the 1760s and 70s, to lighten the load on the bridge foundations, and probably in this case to give the possibility of flood relief. This is the only Scottish bridge retaining this feature unaltered. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
