Scope and Content Salmon fisherman's cottage near Inveraray, Argyll This little cottage was built to house the Duke of Agyll's estate salmon fisherman. A jetty in front of the building was used in conjunction with a rowing boat to net salmon in Loch Fyne making their way to the river Shira to spawn. This view shows the cottage from the north. Its distinctive feature is its large 'ingle-neuk' chimney on the left-hand gable, probably used to smoke salmon to preserve the fish. The jetty had decayed by 1979, so that it is unlikely that salmon fishing is still conducted in the same way. It was still in use in 1958. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
