Scope and Content Ken Viaduct, Parton, Kirkcudbrightshire This viaduct was built to take the Portpatrick Railway over a narrow point on Loch Ken. It was designed by B and E Blyth, Edinburgh, and was one of the first bowed-truss wrought-iron railway bridges in Scotland. This view shows the south side of the viaduct from the east end, showing how the main spans are supported on pairs of cylindrical piers. Steel plate braces were added in the 20th century to the centre of each truss to increase the safe load. The former Portpatrick Railway was closed to all traffic in 1965, and quickly dismantled. This viaduct was sold to a local landowner, and adapted to carry estate road traffic. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
