Scope and Content Old Bridge, Sorn, Ayrshire This bridge carries the old road from Sorn to Catrine and Auchinleck over the Water of Ayr. It is a narrow bridge, with almost semicircular arches. It has a pronounced hump. This view shows the bridge from the north, showing the large size of the arches, and the slenderness of the central pier, with its triangular cutwaters. This is an advanced design for its period, probably built to allow parishioners south of the Ayr easier access to the parish church of Sorn, which is at the north east end of the bridge. A new bridge built in the late 19th century bypasses this one. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
