Scope and Content Former Pert Waterworks, Perth, Perthshire The Perth Waterworks were designed by Adam Anderson to pump water from the river Tay, and to store it in a cast-iron cistern for distribution by gravity to private consumers. In the early 20th century an extension was built to house a large steam pump. This view shows the works from the east. The cistern is the domed upper part of the circular building. The engine and boiler house were at the rear, and the now-demolished 20th extension was to the left. The classical treatment is noteworthy. The sophisticated decorative treatment of this building was due to its proximity to a fashionable residential area. By the time this photograph was taken it had been converted into a visitor centre. It later became an art gallery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
