Scope and Content Gravestone of the Proudfoot family (west face), Glencorse Old Church, Midlothian This gravestone commemorates the family of Patrick Proudfoot who died in 1742. Two of his sons erected this gravestone in memory of their parents. A winged cherub symbolises the ascent of the soul to heaven. The stone is finely carved in a classical style, with Corinthian pilasters flanking the inscription panel and egg-and-dart moulding beneath the pediment. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
