Scope and Content Gravestone of Henry Brock, Torphichen churchyard, West Lothian This is the western face of a gravestone commemorating Henry Brock, possibly a farmer, who died in 1770 aged 57. Within the roundel a pair of cross-bones are overlain with a serpent, symbol of death and man's sinfulness. Above are winged souls, bones and an hourglass, as well as a grinning face flanked by a pair of jawbones. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
