Scope and Content Written on the back of the mounted print: 'Shire: Midlothian. Building: Glencorse Old Kirk. Dated 1754 to a Penicuik Miller’. Photographer: 'G.N.' Date: 'July 1965' Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN: Gravestone of James Tait, Glencorse Old Kirk, Midlothian This gravestone commemorates James Tait, a miller from Penicuik, who died in 1754. Within the pediment are a pair of mill-stones, emblems of the miller's trade. The single bone symbolises death, though the grotesque head is of uncertain meaning. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
