Collection Papers of Betty Willsher, historian, St Andrews, Scotland

Catalogue Number A 34346

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Copies SC 1552882

Scope and Content Shows relief portrait with children. Gravestone of John Craig, Temple churchyard, Midlothian This gravestone commemorates John Craig, a local tenant farmer at 'Outorstoun', who died in 1742 aged 68. Presumably this finely carved portrait is of John himself, clad in typical mid-18th century dress, probably his church-going clothes. He stands protectively over two small boys, both well-dressed, who presumably represent his sons. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
