Scope and Content Engine of PS Leven, Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire This single-cylinder side-lever marine engine was built by Robert Napier, a native of Dumbarton, to be installed in the paddle-steamer 'Leven', for the Dumbarton Steamship Co, which plied between Glasgow and Dumbarton. This view shows the engine mounted on a plinth in the centre of a pond in a 1970s shopping centre in Dumbarton. As can be seen the pond was a magnet for floating rubbish, and the engine was removed to another site in the 1980s. This was the first marine engine built by Napier, who became one of the greatest marine engineers and shipbuilders in the world. When the 'Leven' was broken up, the engine was saved and was presented by Napier's sons to his native town. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
