Scope and Content Workers' housing, Hallside Steelworks, Newton The Steel Company of Scotland was established at Hallside in 1871, originally to make steel by direct reduction from iron oxide obtained as a by-product of sulphuric acid and copper extraction from Spanish pyrites, but soon using the open-hearth process. This view shows the end of one of five short rows of terraced houses apparently built to house workers in the steelworks. Judging by the quality of this housing it was intended for key employees, perhaps foremen melters. This housing survived the closure of the works in 1978 and its subsequent demolition, and was still in occupation in 2000. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
