Description View of headstone for J.P. C.B., 1763: two panels with a figure in each, sun over left figure, moon over right.

Catalogue Number SC 548945

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of B 42923/10

Scope and Content Gravestone of J P and C B, Bo'ness Churchyard, Falkirk The inscription on this stone records only the initials J P and C B, possibly the grave of a husband and wife, with the date 1763. These unusual carvings probably relate to death and resurrection. On the left, the figure appears to hold a sprig and kneels in prayer beneath the sun. Beneath the moon, the other figure holds what appears to be a flower in one hand as well as a wreath. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
