Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating James Thomson, Church Wynd Churchyard, Bo'ness, Falkirk This gravestone commemorates James Thomson, a tenant farmer, who died in 1756. A winged cherub fills the pediment, symbol of the soul's heavenward ascent. An incised inscription 'MEMENTO MORI' (Remember You Must Die) exhorts us to consider our own mortality, a theme echoed by the skull, crossbones and spade within the main panel. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
