Scope and Content Nos 4-7 Rustic Cottages, Colinton Road, Colinton, Edinburgh The old village of Colinton lies in the valley of the Water of Leith to the south-west of Edinburgh. The approach from the city, traditionally named Colinton Road, was first mentioned in 1753, and led to the estates of Colinton and Woodhall. These white-harled cottages, with their distinctive boat-shaped dormer windows, form part of a group of seven cottage-type houses designed by the architect Robert Lorimer in 1900-2 on the south side of Colinton Road. Sir Robert Lorimer (1864-1929), described as the most brilliant Scottish architect of his time, worked mainly in the vernacular tradition, producing an original early 20th-century Scottish Baronial style. Some of his best-known houses are in Colinton. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
