Scope and Content Colinton House (now Merchiston Castle School), Colinton Road, Colinton, Edinburgh Colinton House is a large villa which was built 1801-6 for Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo, who bought the Colinton estate in 1800. It stands in parkland to the north of Colinton village, and was adapted as part of Merchiston Castle School in 1930. This two-storeyed Georgian house, built of Craigleith stone, has a central portico flanked by twin Ionic columns. Single-floor wings extend on either side to create a long, low villa epitomising all the simple architectural refinement of the period. Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo (1739-1806) was the head of the Edinburgh banking company, Forbes Hunter and Company, whose banking house, on the south side of the Parliament Close, helped to finance most of the building of Edinburgh's New Town.
