Scope and Content Colinton Castle in the grounds of Colinton House (now Merchiston Castle School), Colinton Road, Colinton, Edinburgh Colinton Castle, dating from c.1450, became the ancestral home of the Foulis family of Colinton in the 16th century. The castle, now an ivy-clad ruin, stands in the parkland of Colinton House, which was bought by Merchiston Castle School in 1930. The castle, originally L-plan with a stair in the angle, had a new wing and a second stair-tower added in the early 17th century. The castle was repaired after a fire in 1650, but unroofed in 1801 and partly demolished in 1804 to make a picturesque ruin. The castle and its estate were bought in 1519 by Sir James Foulis, a distinguished member of the Scottish judiciary. His descendants lived there until the end of the 18th century, when it was sold to the eminent Edinburgh banker, Sir William Forbes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
