Scope and Content Colinton Castle in the grounds of Colinton House (now Merchiston Castle School), Colinton Road, Colinton, Edinburgh Colinton Castle, dating from c.1450, became the ancestral home of the Foulis family of Colinton in the 16th century. The castle, now an ivy-clad ruin, stands in the parkland of Colinton House, which was bought by Merchiston Castle School in 1930. The castle was originally three-storeyed and was L-shaped with the long wall running east to west. A new wing was added on the north side in the 17th century. The building was partly demolished in 1804 to create a picturesque ruin. Cromwell's troops occupied the castle in 1650, and caused great damage, not only to the building itself, but to the houses, barns and farms of the Foulis estate, much of which was later sold in order to recoup the financial loss incurred.
