Scope and Content General view from south-west of Heron House, No 255 St Vincent Street, Glasgow Heron House, built 1967-71 by architects Derek Stephenson & Partners, is a complex of offices, car park and shops occupying a sloping site enclosing St Vincent Street Lane. This megastructure, which includes a 13-storeyed tower block, is built around the famous St Vincent Street Free Church which was built 1857-9 to designs by architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson. This shows Thomson's Greek Revival Church and tower on the left, surrounded by the concrete structures which make up the Heron House complex. A podium with shops at street level leads the eye up to the 13-storeyed main office block with its distinctive one-storey setbacks every three storeys. Behind this can be seen part of a five-storeyed block. This complex contrasts the towering stone forms of the 19th-century church with angular Modern tower blocks and shops clad in 'Creetown' granite aggregate cladding. The sloping site allowed the construction of a variety of access levels, adding interest to the overall design. This complex has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
