Scope and Content St Vincent Street Lane from west, Heron House, No 255 St Vincent Street, Glasgow Heron House, built 1967-71 by architects Derek Stephenson & Partners, is a complex of offices, car park and shops occupying a sloping site enclosing St Vincent Street Lane. This megastructure, which includes a 13-storeyed tower block, is built around the famous St Vincent Street Free Church which was built 1857-9 to designs by architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson. This shows the covered section of St Vincent Street Lane, with the walls of the 19th-century church on the left showing some of the incised stone decoration. By contrast, the modern offices (right) are constructed from pre-cast concrete and clad in 'Creetown' granite aggregate panels and tiles. The skylit tunnel has open sections and squares filled with glass bricks. The idea of bringing cars into the centre of the Heron House complex of shops and offices was also seen in the Cumbernauld Town Centre (built 1963-72). This complex has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
