Scope and Content Lower Dens Mill, Dundee, Angus This flax-spinning mill was built by Baxter Brothers, and became part of one of the largest linen complexes in the world, supplying yarn to be woven and finished in the Upper Dens Factory, immediately to the north. This view shows a twisting frame in the mill, used for making two-ply thread out of two strands of yarn. In this machine the finished thread was wound onto bobbins mounted on spindles at the base. The machine was made by Douglas Fraser at Arbroath. The Dens complex, by that time in the ownership of Low and Bonar, was closed in 1978. Subsequently the 1850 Upper Dens Factory was converted into housing, and the Lower Dens Mill housed a range of small businesses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
