Scope and Content Lower Dens Mill, Dundee, Angus This flax-spinning mill was built by Baxter Brothers, and became part of one of the largest linen complexes in the world, supplying yarn to be woven and finished in the Upper Dens Factory, immediately to the north. This view shows heckling machines, used to separate the short fibres (tow) from the long fibres (dressed line) in raw flax. The latter was then spun to make yarn. On the left is a bale of raw flax, ready to be fed to the machines. The Dens complex, by that time in the ownership of Low and Bonar, was closed in 1978. Subsequently the 1850 Upper Dens Factory was converted to housing, and the Lower Dens Mill housed a range of small businesses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
