Scope and Content Lauriston Castle, Cramond Road South, Edinburgh Lauriston Castle, a late 16th-century tower-house built for Sir Archibald Napier, stands in wooded grounds with uninterrupted views over the Firth of Forth. The house was extended in the 19th century, and was bequeathed to the nation in 1926. The four-storeyed tower-house, with its very large chimney and twin turrets, faces south. The long two-storeyed Jacobean extension to the east was built by William Burn in 1827, and the gabled porch added by William Playfair in 1845. Lauriston Castle was originally built for Sir Archibald Napier of Merchiston, father of John Napier, the inventor of logarithms, to replace an earlier castle to the east that was extensively damaged in the English invasion of 1544.
