Scope and Content Central boss over the apse of St Mary's Chapel in St Nicholas Church, Aberdeen In the mid-15th century the choir of St Nicholas was extended eastwards over sloping ground. The low rib-vaulted chapel of St Mary's or Our Lady of Pity was built to support the apse and eastern bays of this extension by Sir Andrew Wrycht, master mason. This carved oak boss over the apse at the intersection of the groin ribs is decorated with initials representing the Virgin Mary. Founded before 1151, St Nicholas (known as the Mither Kirk) was one of the largest medieval burgh kirks in Scotland. The original structure of the church, including the chapel, was finally finished in 1508. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
