Scope and Content Aerial view of Duddingston Village, Edinburgh Duddingston is a small and compact village built around a church founded in the 12th century. It lies in the shelter of Arthur's Seat, just outside the boundary of Holyrood Park, in a quiet rural setting on the shores of Duddingston Loch. The church lies just outside the boundary wall, with the manse a little further east, standing in extensive grounds which run down to the lochside. The village, mainly a collection of 18th- and 19th-century villas, lies on the other side of a narrow lane. King David I gave the estate of Duddingston to Kelso Abbey c.1130. The monks, soon after establishing a church on the shores of the loch, feued the estate to a Norman knight, Dodin de Berwic. The name Duddingston means Dodin's 'toun' or farm place.
