Scope and Content Early 19th-century engraving of Duddingston House, Milton Road West, Duddingston, Edinburgh Duddingston House, the former manor house of Duddingston Village, has been described as one of the finest 18th-century houses in Britain. It was designed by Sir William Chambers for the 8th Earl of Abercorn, and completed in 1768. The house was designed in an austere Classical style on two floors, its main feature being the large central pedimented portico, supported by four Corinthian columns. It was built in beautiful parkland, laid out by James Robertson c.1768. The Earl of Abercorn bought the Duddingston estate in 1745 from the Duke of Argyll. He enclosed the farmlands, previously worked on the traditional 'runrig' system, built a house, and had the park and gardens laid out in the style of Capability Brown.
