Scope and Content Family group at Hillside House, No 44 The Causeway, Duddingston Village, Edinburgh The Causeway is Duddingston's main street, a narrow lane which runs from the gates of the church the length of the village. It has a number of 18th- and 19th-century houses, as well as the village's only public house, the 18th-century Sheep's Heid Inn. Hillside House, a Victorian villa with a large south-facing garden, stands on the north side of The Causeway. This family group, photographed in 1909 on the steps of the house, includes the Lord High Steward of the Duddingston Curling Society (left). The Duddingston Curling Society, formed in 1795, played mainly on the south side of Duddingston Loch on artificially constructed shallow ponds which froze over quickly in winter. The club had an octagonal stone curling house by the side of the loch. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
