Scope and Content Duddingston Lodge, Old Church Lane, Duddingston Village, Edinburgh Old Church Lane, a narrow walled lane that runs the length of the village, was originally the route to Duddingston Parish Church. Its continuation westwards from the church gates dates from 1856 when the road through Holyrood Park was constructed. Duddingston Lodge, on the north side of the lane, is an elegant early 19th-century house with a polished ashlar front and a pilastered doorpiece. It has a small attractive front garden behind a low stone wall with railings. The house was built on a feu (plot) purchased from the Earl of Abercorn c.1810. The earl bought the lands of Duddingston in 1745 and built Duddingston House, one of the finest 18th-century houses in Britain, to the east of the village in 1768.
