Scope and Content The north transept of Duddingston Parish Church, Old Church Lane, Duddingston Village, Edinburgh Duddingston Church, one of the oldest churches in Scotland still in regular use, was built on land gifted by King David I to the Abbot of Kelso in 1130. The basic structure of the church is Romanesque, with 17th- and 18th-century additions. The north transept has an upper doorway on its east side dated 1631 which has been blocked and the access stair removed. The north-facing windows have loop tracery and stained glass by glass-stainer, Douglas Strachan c.1935. In 1631 the north transept, named the Prestonfield aisle, was added to the nave of the church. It was built with an upper gallery to accommodate the family and tenants of Sir James Hamilton of Prestonfield. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
