Scope and Content South side of the cloister arcade, Oronsay Priory, Oronsay, Argyll and Bute Oronsay Priory, a house of Augustinian canons, was founded in the second quarter of the 14th century by John I, Lord of the Isles. Unusually for Argyll, it was a medieval foundation on a site where there is no surviving previous Early Christian activity. The south side of the cloister arcade is part of the original priory and consists of five low round-headed arches set on intermediate piers. Thin slabs have been used for the wedge-shaped stones, or voussoirs, in the arches. The cloister consisted of a covered passage which went round a quadrangle and linked all the principal parts of the monastery. Originally it had a lean-to roof. There are still some corbels which would have supported the runner-beam for the roof. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
