Scope and Content Round tower, Brechin Cathedral, Angus It is likely that this site has been occupied by a religious community since around 970 or earlier. The round tower, which was originally freestanding, and some sculptures in the present cathedral, are all that remain of an early monastery. The tower is thought to date to the 11th century and its roof to the 14th century. It is about 26m high and its masonry is of a very high standard. The windows are belfry openings. Originally, the tower would have had seven storeys with wooden floors. The round tower is one of only two surviving round towers of this type found in Scotland; the other is at Abernethy. The towers are comparable with many in Ireland which formed part of early monasteries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
